“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

Today I thought it would be good to take a look at some of the important qualities that define successful people. There is no way to define an exact formula for personal success but people that achieve great things and do well generally have a lot more in common than you would think on first glance. Successful people come in all shapes and sizes and from all kinds of different backgrounds but they all share a set of unique qualities which helped them to get ahead and make their fortunes.

We all struggle at some point in our quest for success and I hope that you can learn to adopt some of these powerful traits into your personality. No matter what you are trying to achieve, if you work hard at developing these important personal characteristics then you will become more successful in both your personal and professional life.

Take Responsibility

“As human beings, we are endowed with freedom of choice, and we cannot shuffle off our responsibility upon the shoulders of God or nature. We must shoulder it ourselves. It is our responsibility.”

If I had to choose one main reason why some people were more successful than others then it would probably be this one. Successful people are always willing to stand up and take responsibility for their actions. Taking responsibility is about being open and honest with ourselves and admitting our mistakes when we are wrong. Without making mistakes we can never learn how to do things right. Successful people make just as many mistakes as everyone else, if not more, but the real difference is that they acknowledge their mistakes and learn from them while most people try to blame others for their misfortunes. If you make a mistake or you want to change something about your life then it is up to you do make things happen.

Challenges not obstacles

Successful people often prefer to see life big problems as challenges to be overcome and they do not give up at the first sign of trouble. It is almost inevitable that the more successful you become, the more problems and difficulties you will have to face. Stop seeing everything as a reason for giving up and starting seeing your problems as rewarding challenges that can be overcome with the due diligence. The true test of character is reflected not by our problems but they way we deal with them.

Do what you love doing

The more you enjoy doing what you do, the more likely it is that you will put in the necessary work needed to become successful. Try and think hard about what you really want to do in life and try and find a way to make that you life’s goal. When you do something you love doing for a living then there will never be such thing as work for you again. If you can find your passion then you will be glad to put in hours of hard work because you love doing what you do. Slaving away at a job you hate doing is bad for your soul and you will never be able to find the energy needed to get to the top. If you can find your true passion then working hard will become something you look forward to every day.

Perseverance

“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.”

This is another really important characteristic that pretty much every successful person has. The ability to carry on in the face of adversity is what really separates then men from the boys. I doubt you could find a single successful person that really had it easy and didn’t feel like giving up at some point. The difference is that they carried on going when everyone around them was telling them to give up and throw in the towel. Sometimes you have to learn to listen to yourself rather than those around you.

Find a role model

“People never improve unless they look to some standard or example higher and better than themselves.”

A great deal of successful people learn a lot about who they want to become by studying the lives of other great people. Don’t be afraid to look to the people you admire for inspiration in times when you need guidance. Who do you admire and what is it you admire about them? Find a role model who reflects all the things you want to be and try and be like them at all times.

Keep learning

“I don’t think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” - Abraham Lincoln

Now matter how far you come and how successful you are if you stop learning then you have given up on improving yourself. All successful people continue to learn new things each day and never assume that they know everything about what they do. If you think you know it all then you are most probably blind to reality. If you always seek to learn something new then you can build yourself into a better person with each and every day. Tiger Woods set us a great example to prove my point on this. At a time when he was regarded at the best golfer in the world, Tiger Woods set about to improve his swing because he knew he could do better.

“You can have a wonderful week even when your swing isn’t sound. But can you still contend in tournaments with that swing when your timing isn’t good? Will it hold up over a long period of time? The answer to those questions, with the swing I had, was no. And I wanted to change that.”

It is this search for new ways to improve our skills that is at the heart of every successful person.

I hope you enjoyed reading this and feel more motivated to succeed. If there is one thing successful people teach us, its that we can overcome any obstacle with perseverance and an open mind. Success isn’t just a haphazard thing that happens by chance. All successful people have most, if not all, of the qualities I have listed above.
